Amazon launches Game Downloads service with over 600 games

Amazon has recently launched the Amazon Game Downloads store that will allow casual gamers to choose from over 600 casual gaming titles and they could even download trial versions of the games they are interested in before they buy the complete game. All of these 600 games are priced at $9.99 or less.

Unlike other product purchases where you have to wait for the product to get delivered before you use it, these games can be purchased and download to your PC instantly. Sun releases latest version of OpenSolaris and plans laptops in future

Sun Microsystems announced today the immediate availability of OpenSolaris 2008.11. The new features in OpenSolaris include Time Slider that provides an interface to the ZFS functionality to all users. Developers are given expanded access to respositories to be able to get innovations from all the users through the updated package manager.

Sun has also announced a strategic relationship with Toshiba to deliver pre-configured OpenSolaris on Toshiba laptops in early 2009. Both users and developers will then be able to buy notebooks that pre-configured with the latest version of OpenSolaris on them. The laptops will be intially available in US but later expand to worldwide.

YouTube finally plays HD videos for real

Finally, the much awaited HD option is now available in YouTube. There were quite a few reports about YouTube adding high quality videos but not many thought that they would add HD option so soon. And now here it is.

Doing a search for ‘HD’ in YouTube will show you some videos that were uploaded in that format and from now on when you try to upload a clip to YouTube, you will see the HD upload option there. The HD playback is not the default option, you will have to specifically switch to HD mode (watch in HD) to see the videos in high quality. The normal quality YouTube videos are played at 320×180, 25fps and in mono audio while YouTube HD videos are seems to playing at 1280×720, full frame rate and AAC stereo audio.

Also I can’t seem to be able to embed a HD video from YouTube in my blog yet, perhaps we will have to wait for sometime before we could do that.

Dell debuts ultra-small studio hybrid desktop

Dell has unveiled an ultra-small desktop PC, that it’s calling a ‘hybrid’, which features a laptop processor. The hybrid studio doesn’t compromise on the features that it offers but also offers significant savings in power bills as the hybrid model consumes less power than a regular desktop with similar hardware configuration. Dell claims that this studio hybrid PC uses upto 70 percent less energy, thus making it extremely energy efficient and Energy Star 4.0 compliant.

This smallest desktop PC from Dell is roughly about the size of a collegiate dictionary and can be easily placed in book shelf next to an actual dictionary. That makes it about 80 percent smaller than typical desktop mini-tower. The PC can be setup in either vertical or horizontal orientation depending on the requirement. Hybrid PC takes personalization to the next level with the choice of seven optional interchangeable external finishes or color sleeves. Use your home phone number anywhere with Vonage Pro

Vonage has launched a new service called Vonage Pro that allows its customers to use their home phone number to make calls from anywhere they have an Internet connection.

Vonage Pro allows its customers, with good Internet connection (aka Broadband), to make VoIP calls and the recipients of the calls will see the home number of the customer dialing the call, as if the customer has dialed from his home. Vonage Pro package comes along with a new version of SoftPhone client called Vonage Companion. When a Vonage Pro customer receives a call, it rings on both the home number and their companion. Customers can make outbound calls from both and use their PC for VoIP calls.

Samsung Announces Mass Production of the 500 GB Hard Drive for Laptops

Samsung recently announced the mass production of Spinpoint M6, the world’s highest capacity hard drive for laptops and also mass production of Spinpoint MP2 – one of the world’s fastest laptop hard drives. The 500GB storage capacity of Spinpoint M6 hard disk makes it the obvious choice of those who store a vast amount of information in their notebooks.

For those interested in the technicalities, the M6 hard disk consists of three 167GB platters, is 9.5mm in height, meets the Microsoft fast-boot design requirements and supports ramp load and unload of up to 600,000 times. This drive also features a 5400rpm spindle speed, a 8MB cache, and 3.0Gbps SATA interface with a Free-Fall-Sensor available as an optional feature.

Mozilla Firefox 3.0 Vulnerability Found

Less than a day after the Firefox 3 has been launched, a zero day vulnerability has been found that not only affects Firefox 3.0 but also earlier versions such as Firefox 2.0.x. The vulnerability was verified at TippingPoint labs and then it was reported to the Mozilla security team.

The exact details of the vulnerability are not known yet but we only know that the vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the exploited computer.

Mozilla is still working on patching up the vulnerability and a patch is expected soon.

Firefox 3 releases on June 17th

Vodafone to sell iPhone in India

In a recent news, Vodafone is to sell Apple iPhones in India this year. Not only in India, it has won a contract from Apple to sell iPhones in 10 other countries that include Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey, the Newbury and Italy.

It’s not certain as to when the iPhone will be launched in India this year but many are speculative about a launch in June/July timeframe.
