How To: Backup and Restore Network Settings of Windows XP

We may sometimes be required to make changes to the network settings in our systems and there are chances that you may not be able to reset them to match the original setting in case you want to revert. This post will show you the steps to take a backup and restore the network settings of your Windows XP system in a very simple way.

Backup the Network Settings of XP

Windows XP comes with a built-in backup tool that’s used to take a backup of the system and the same tool can also be used to take a backup of the network settings. Here’s how:

» Using the Backup or Restore Wizard to Backup Network Settings

1. Click on Start » Programs » Accessories » System Tools » click Backup. This will bring up the Backup or Restore Wizard on your screen.

2. On the Backup or Restore window, select Back up files and settings and then click Next.

3. You should now be looking at What to Back Up window, click on Let me choose what to back up and then click Next.

4. On the next screen, Items to Back Up click to expand My Computer, and then select System State. Click Next.

5. Since you are backing up only networking setting and not other files and folders, you may choose to take the backup on any removable media device such as a USB flash disk or a floppy disk or even a folder on your own system. I prefer to take the backup on a USB flash disk so that restoring from backup is painless in case the hard disk crashes.

You may now click on Finish to complete the backup process on the Completing the Backup or Restore Wizard screen.

That’s it. We now have backup of our system’s network settings.

Restore the Network Settings of XP

Let’s now look at steps to restore the settings in case we need to.

» Using the Backup or Restore Wizard to Restore Network Settings
