A Free and Open Source Photo Editing Software for Windows - Paint.Net


Paint.Net was initially an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft and is currently maintained by a group of professional who had initially started it.

Development of this tool was started to replace the MS Paint software that’s built in Windows, but grown to become very powerful than MS Paint. Newbies who can not afford to buy a copy of Photoshop, people who rarely in need of editing photos and those looking for a free alternative to Photoshop - must try this tool.

» Features - Interface is familiar with that of MS Paint. Supports Layers, Shapes, Curving tools, a new Gradient tool and Magic Wand. Also available with the current release of the tool are a text editor, tool for zooming and a Recoloring tool. It stores unlimited undo actions in a separate History window and just highlight the undo item from History of actions and select undo. Once undone, you can redo it again.

There are many special effects in this tool. Some are blurring, red-eye removal, sharpening, noise and embossing. Use the unique 3D Rotate/Zoom effect that makes it add tilting and perspective. One you also tweak and adjust image’s brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, curves and levels. You can also convert an image to black and white, or sepia-toned.

» Open Source and Free - Available as a free download are this tool and its entire source code. Large amount of coding is done in C# and small amount of code related to setup and shell integration is written in C++.
