Search Wikia - An Open Source Project and Alternative to Today’s Web Search
Search Wikia [or better known as Wikiasari] is an open source project to create a search engine that will rely on human intelligence rather than computer algorithms to produce effective search results. Though this project has nothing to do with WikiPedia, will mostly rely on people to power the search results. The exact working model of this soon to come search engine is not known yet, but a look at this Wikia page will tell few interesting things about the current position of this project. The infrastructure for this project is provided by Nutch and Lucene.
Wikiasari wants to change the way people search on Internet and find what they want. This project believes that the current search is broken because of lack freedom, community, accountability and transparency. And I think they are right in what they believe in. Wikia is funding this project’s development and the Search Wikia page will be updated on December 27th after a rework.
At the time of writing this post, we do not have more information than what we have already covered here. It could be that a very big community of people [including you and us] will feed the search engine with their ratings about a page, site and content. The search engine will then produce results based on what people see and like everyone else to see. We will be more happy if this search engine will provide more accurate and better search results than other search engines. As far as we can guess, it may not use crawlers or spiders like other search engines do to discover and index websites and initially may not have lot of search results to offer. But then since it might be mostly people powered search engine, whatever search results would be produced might be much better than the search results of other search engines.
Note: Many websites and bloggers had earlier reported that Amazon and A9 are funding this initiative but it’s clearly stated on their site that Amazon or A9 have got nothing to do with this project and Amazon is only an investor in Wikia.
From their site:
Reporters and bloggers note: Amazon has nothing to do with this project. They are a valued investor in Wikia, but people are really speculating beyond the facts. This has nothing to do with A9, Amazon, etc.
We wish them good luck for this project and await further update on their site.
